Why do we have a lower back? – the lower back area has three purposes namely postural support, better movement and guarding against damage of internal tissue.

Possible causes – The primary cause for the pain is muscular, ligament or tendon strain as a result of an injury or joint problems. The cushions in the lower back can also be strained in turn causing pressure on nerves.

Symptoms – Symptoms of low back pain include pain from last back rib to upper leg. The pain can spread from the upper leg, lower even into your feet. The hip and buttocks areas are also often effected. Pain can increase with movement such as stretching, bending or sitting. Muscles in the back can also spasm causing immense pain even when merely coughing or sneezing.

Temporary relief methods – The best relief for back pain is to lie on your back and raise your legs either by putting a cushion or chair under your knees, during rest periods. Medication either in prescribed or natural form can also be taken to relieve the pain. Heat pads as well as ice packs are also great for relaxing the tensed and strained muscles.

Bad structure – the greatest root of back problems is incorrect posture from being too lazy especially during the adolescent phase to stand or sit up straight. Make sure that the chairs in your home have the correct support. The knees should never be level with your back. The ideal posture, rest position is with bent knees on your side.

Treatments. A wider variety of short and long term treatments are available depending on the degree of pain and injury. Do not take part in any activities that can make the injury or pain worse. Back pain should not be treated with bed rest exceeding a couple of days as this will just weaken the muscles more. Staying active is very important to speed up recover, no matter how much the pain is. Normal pain medication will possibly relieve the worst pain. However it is imperative to identify the cause of the problem and not just treat the symptoms. Preventing of lower back pain. Exercise is the best kept secret for prevention of back problems and pain. Keeping the muscles supple by regular exercise will significantly decrease risk of injury. Focus on back muscle targeting workouts. Steer clear from lifting heavy equipment, furniture or even shopping.
