My daughter was assaulted at knife point in the very same university building where I have taught Humanities classes for eight years. I was taught a hard lesson that day in the need to prevent crime against college students.

She was accosted by a complete stranger in one of the restrooms, demanding money for her life. She had gone quite early, ahead of a 7 AM class, and while she prayed for someone to walk in on them, no one came.

She had a pepper spray, having brought various self defense devices everyday since we started discussing within the family the importance to prevent crime against college students, just before she went to college herself.

Telling the assaulter that she needed to retrieve money from her pocket, she pulled out the pepper spray and sprayed for dear life. Fortunately, it was one of the self defense devices of which she was familiar with the usage.

When the attacker had spray in his eyes, she rushed in the direction of the front entryway. She also activated the personal alarm she had while she searched for a guard she knew would be there, being alert to prevent crime against college students.

After the culprit was apprehended, we learned that he had wanted the money to buy narcotics and was willing to do anything to procure some. It was exactly those illegal substances that should persuade teenagers to get protection for themselves.

If I were there with her, I would have surely prevented the attack. I always have a stun gun with me and had taken her there. Unfortunately, I was at the third floor at that time.

In every class I have since taught, I make it a point to emphasize the use of self defense devices to prevent crime against college students. The lesson may not be a part of Humanities but is certainly essential to humanity.
